God called Abraham out of an idolatrous background (Joshua 24:2) and he became the father of the Hebrew nation. His story is found in Genesis 12 through 25. The New Testament repeatedly points to Abraham as a man of great faith (cf. Rom. 4:18-22; Gal. 3:6-18; Hebrews 11:8-19; James 2:21-24), and James highlights that God called Abraham his friend (Jas. 2:23; cf. Isa. 41:8).
